As more families embrace the joy of canine companionship, it's important to contemplate the environmental paw print of our furry friends. Embracing sustainability is not just a statement, it's a lifestyle, one that can be pursued without compromising the happiness of your dog. Here's a guide on how to shape an eco-friendly, sustainable life with your dog.
A sustainable lifestyle is more than an aspiration; it is a path that involves practical changes and conscious decisions. Incorporating sustainable practices into our daily routines, like those with our dogs, can seem daunting initially but often leads to healthier and more fulfilling experiences.
Each step, from the food we provide, the toys we choose, how we manage waste, our grooming habits, to the type of shelter we provide our dogs, all contribute to a larger eco-conscious picture. By adopting rather than shopping, we not only give a deserving life to our loyal companion, but we also resist environmentally detrimental practices.
Adapting to a sustainable lifestyle doesn't mean compromising the comfort or happiness of our beloved pets. Instead, it encourages a harmonious coexistence with nature, fostering an environment that future generations, and their furry friends, can enjoy. This transformation takes time and commitment, but the reward is a cleaner, healthier world that every dog and dog-lover can appreciate. Today, we can start making a difference—one paw at a time.

]]>Recently we published a dog blog on reasons why you should pick up your dog's poop. And the reasons are many. When dog waste is not cleaned up properly it will pollute the ground and surface water, attract flies/pests, create an unsanitary environment for dogs and other animals, which can transmit parasites and other infectious diseases back to humans.
The EPA estimates that the average dog creates about ⅓ of a pound of waste per day - or about 275 pounds per year! Composting your dog’s waste is an inexpensive method for disposing of this waste and it can enhance the environment as well as reduce the amount of waste being added into landfills.
There is a huge misconception that dog waste is not compostable. It very much is - it's just NOT safe to use in compost that will be used for consumable vegetation. Parasites and bacteria can live in dog waste including E. coli and salmonell along with several types of worms like ringworm and tapeworm. They can live in the soil for years so it’s best to keep your dogs waste away from your gardens or from where your animals can get to it. According to the EPA dog waste is a safe soil additive for revegetation and landscaping when it is composted properly.
You might be wondering, what is composting anyway?
Composting is the controlled breakdown or degradation of organic material into a product known as humus. Composting dog waste is a natural process that requires water, organic matter, air, microbes, and a little human intervention.
Each year, tons of pet waste is thrown into trash cans and ends up in sanitary landfills, by composting we can reduce the amount of waste in landfills.
According to the EPA composting can reduce the volume of dog waste by 50 percent.
When you compost dog poop it becomes a nutrient that will improve your yard and trees. If the soil in your yard is lacking organic matter no store-bought fertilizer will get you the results you are looking for in your lawn. However, when you produce good compost you can create a quality soil additive that will improve the condition and fertility in your soil.
If you compost the dog poop correctly you can actually destroy the harmful pathogens that are found in dog waste.
Composting lessens the chances that dog poop will pollute groundwater and streams.
This compost can be used as mulch material and can be a good source of plant nutrients for your potted plants and garden. But, remember it should not be used on plants you intended to consume.
When you begin composting you will need some nitrogen-rich materials and some carbon-rich materials. Nitrogen materials are your “wet” materials, dog waste, green grass clippings and vegetable waste work best. Carbon materials that can be used are things like sawdust, straw or hay, and shredded newspaper.
You will also need two bins, one to contain the composting materials and one to actively compost in, a shovel to turn the compost, a long-stemmed thermometer, and a water supply. Water from a garden hose is okay however, you may want to let the water sit in the sun to get warm before adding it to compost. Cold water will lower the temperature of the compost and we want it to stay warm.
This fact sheet from the US department of agriculture gives super helpful advice and professional tips for composting dog waste.
As you know, our Doggy Do Good® premium pet waste bags are 38% vegetable-based and a great alternative to regular polyethylene plastic bags, which are not compostable and take decades to break down. So feel free to use our bags in your home compost because they are made in part from corn starch (an annually renewable resource) and other bio-based proprietary components. When composted properly, our poop bags are safer for the environment and will break down completely.
So if you choose to compost, and use a poop bag when you are out for a walk, or cleaning up your yard - be sure that poop bag is Certified Home Compostable. That's the Doggy Do Good® Difference!

A little bit about me...
My mom is a widow who was living alone, and she was somewhat depressed. Her son had her choose a dog (that's me) from the shelter as a birthday gift. I had been brought in as a stray, and she actually chose me from a photo online (cause I'm that cute!!).
She says that I am, in some ways, the best thing that has ever happened to her. We both no longer are lonely, we're constant companions. We love taking daily walks, and I love playing fetch and playing with my toys. I am very smart, know lots of tricks, and give so much love and happiness!

]]>Coco was born on a farm near Brookville PA to her mommy Phyllis and her daddy Hoss. She was one of the feistiest of her littermates, but she quickly settled when she came to her forever home. She made friends with many dogs, including many admirers in the Dog Park. Her best friends were Sage the Basset Hound and Chloe the Magnificent. At this point, Coco had grown up to be a fine proud piggy!
Eventually, when her Pig-Keeper went away to work for many months at a time, she made her forever piggy friend Harriet at the Pigsburgh Squealers Rescue (@pigsburghsquealers). Harriet’s Pig Dad had died so it was a must for Harriet to become part of the family.
Coco’s likes include eating treats like peanuts, carrots, grapes, chocolate, and anything else she thinks is yummy. She loves to solicit scritches from her Pig-Keeper. When she is outside, she likes sunbathing, foraging for tasty plants, and walking around the yard. At night, she, of course, snuggles with her bestie Harriet. Her favorite hobby is getting treats out of her Kong and other toys in her toy pile. She also loves making her bed and will arrange it for an hour to get it just right.
Like most people, Coco dislikes the cold and the rain. She also has no taste for onions, green peppers, and garlic. And of course, she dislikes waiting for breakfast and dinner!

]]>"Cammie (6 yrs old & Calico) was my first companion when I first moved to Ohio by myself. She was that cat who pushed her nose against her cage at the shelter to get my attention and wouldn’t let me leave without her. She’s always loved attention and will run around in circles chasing her tail for guests. She is sassy and sweet. Along with her brother, she has two boy cat cousins who live with my sister, and Cammie is the “queen” of the roost whenever we visit. I love her little brown cheek “kiss” as I call it.
I adopted Hugo (4 yrs old & Gray/White) from a shelter a couple of years later. He was a shy boy, having been sadly abused by previous owners. But now he’s healthy, and he loves to curl up in my lap and give kisses. Once he warms up to you, he’ll reach up to give you paw hugs, too. And yes, his pupils are always big and adorable when he’s trying to beg for more treats.
They were both great traveling buddies when I moved back to Texas to be near family this past year, and they enjoy trips to “Grandma’s” house where they get extra rubs and attention.“

Aeryn is a 4 1/2 year-old border collie/ lab mix. In the fall of 2015 I was looking for a puppy, and when I saw her picture on a local rescue's website I knew she was meant to be with me. I drove 3 hours to meet her and brought her straight home. Aeryn loves to play treat puzzles, destroy stuffed toys, and is learning to communicate with voice-recordable buttons. She tolerates her brother, but wishes he would wrestle with her sometimes.
Top Cat came to live with us 1 1/2 years ago, when his dad had to leave for school. He was found as a stay 2 years before and estimated to be about 6 1/2 now. He likes to hang out close to the action, and is selective with his treats. He is FIV positive, and loves being outside and is great at coming inside when called. He would like his sister more if she were a little calmer and quieter.

]]>It’s hard to measure how much dogs enhance our lives. They provide companionship and joy on a daily basis, and most of us would consider them a part of the family. That’s why, if you’re wanting to boost your dog’s quality of life, it’s not a weird thing. Why not give your loyal pup the best life you can, even if it’s a smidge elaborate? Here are a few ways you can make your dog’s life more luxurious:
According to Sleep.org, dogs spend an average of 12 to 14 hours a day sleeping. Therefore, it only makes sense that your pup’s life of luxury would begin by you providing them with a top-notch bed so that they can maximize these all-important hours.
Since the most comfortable dog beds on the market can be expensive, you want to make sure you choose the right one. Consider your dog’s body type, research the best beds available, and pick one that fits their body type and needs. For instance, if your dog is a large breed or a senior, they might benefit most from an orthopedic bed. If they are a smaller breed, look into self-warming or heated beds.
If you’re going for total luxury, don’t stop at their primary bed. You could even get an additional bed for the outdoors as well as one for lounging in the living room—or anywhere else you two lounge together. That way, your pooch can rest comfortably at any time of the day without missing out on time with you!
Your dog can’t live the good life if they’re not in good health. As diet has a significant impact on a person’s health and well-being, so it is with canines. Make sure you’re giving your pup the best food you can find. Their food should have the best ingredients and provide optimal nutrition. Learn how to read pet food labels and find the perfect option for your furry friend.
Along those same lines, it’s crucial to learn what foods could be toxic to your dog. As Medical News Today explains, you should steer clear of a number of people-foods, like cherries, avocados, and grapes. While a little sample might not sound like a big deal, the wrong choice could wind you and Fido up at the vet’s office.
Your pet’s dish is one of the top germ hot spots in the home. Give your furry friend the cleanest, greatest tasting water with GOpure Pet! The GOpure purifies and enhances the water, prevents slimy build-up in the bowl, and helps prevent grass burn.
The pod comes with a suction-cup holder to adhere pod to the bottom of the bowl. When you drop the capsule into tap water, millions of microscopic pores go to work. The GOpure Pod has an advanced ceramic core that is made from “nature’s filter” or diatomaceous earth - plus a silver element, which promotes an ionic exchange and eliminates bacteria.
The silver element also helps to maintain the hygiene of the ceramic over the course of its usage. The ceramic core acts as a magnet to attract impurities while releasing valuable trace minerals. The pod has antibacterial properties and has the ability to kill 99.97% of E. Coli germs, as well as removes 97.00% of chlorine, nitrate, nitrite, fluoride, & metals like copper, lead, manganese, iron.
Healthy hydration and good nutrition is essential for your dog to live its best life. You can help keep them from getting sick by providing plenty of fresh, clean water with GOpure for pets.
Outings with your pup can be big fun, and just as being outdoors benefits all of us humans, dogs are meant to spend lots of time outside. With that in mind, look for ways to spend more time in nature with your pup.
Find a good dog-friendly park near your home (or venture to a dog park), and try to take your pup there regularly so that they can enjoy the sights, smells, and sounds of nature. It’s best for dogs to get exposure to the outdoors on a daily basis.
If you can’t take Fido to the park every day, at least take them for a walk on your street or enjoy some enrichment activities with your dog. Various toys and games will be wonderful fodder for bonding!
Just like you, your canine companion loves to be clean and feel fresh. Be sure to regularly bathe your pup, brush through their fur, wipe down their paws, and clip their nails. To save money, you can learn to groom them yourself, though it doesn’t hurt to visit a professional every now and then.
You know you want your pup to live high on the hog, so make it happen! Get them a high-quality bed (or three), and feed the best quality food you can find. Also, head to the park and/or for walks around the neighborhood, and keep up with grooming. In no time, your furry sidekick will be living the pampered life they deserve.

Our favorite things to do are romping around outside with Kong tennis balls (cuz you know, balls are life!) and wrestling one another, which sometimes drives the pawrents crazy. We love to have zoomies inside the house at random hours, while crashing into things. Recommending the hours of 5:30 am – 6:30 am especially! Our faces may be derpy but we’re as sweet as hula pie!

]]>Just a few weeks ago I was staying steps from the Ocean in Marina Del Ray, California - sounds dreamy? Add in two small pups. . . even dreamier!! That's right - I was Pet Sitting Pico & Penny - one elderly and nearly blind pup - who enjoyed snoozing and walks on the beach and the other a spunky little lady up for whatever the day may hold. Both were so sweet and in need of a surrogate parent while theirs were traveling for eight days. So I volunteered myself and my pet parenting services. And it was amazing!! Living in a gorgeous location, with two new furiends. This is the ultimate vacation with free accommodation - in my opinion.
I'm not even sure how I stumbled upon this amazing resource. I was obviously daydreaming about staying in the mountains of California and up popped TrustedHouseSitter.com I had heard about folks that live a somewhat nomadic lifestyle and bounce from home to home. SImply caring for the house, yard, mail, fur-family (if they can't travel) and seemed like a really interesting adventure.
So I signed us up - it's all review based - similar to Airbnb or other services that are exchange based. And we got going. I booked us (the whole family Olive pup included) on a month sit outside of Chicago - right away - with no reviews - just some messages back and forth. And we had an incredible month and cared for Duke - a little pup that was pumped for life (he actually did these little twirly spin/jumps when he got excited which was hard not to laugh out loud each time). His family was traveling Asia for the month and living in a Chicago suburb in the fall was truly a beautiful gift for us.
(Side logistical note : While we are away we rent out our house - so it becomes a source of additional income.)
Then, I did some sits independently - flying in and out of Los Angeles, because, well . . . California. I've stayed with Della a few times in West Hollywood - Two Cats (Thor & Wim) and Two Pups (Jack & Stella) in Atwater Village (see Stella in the picture) While in town I am just seeing friends - taking some classes - but basically just loving on these furbabies and living (reading, writing, hiking) - It's become a very addictive side hobby.
I LOVE to travel + I LOVE everyone's pets. . . . this really works.
Here's another advantage. Time apart is AMAZING for a partnership.
As a business team #twopeepsandapup - my husband and I work together running a Pet Company and that is great. We can be anywhere (a complete gift) allowing us to spend SO much time together. . . traveling together. . . exploring together. . . working together. . . eating together. . . sharing together. . . (I'm feeling suffocated just writing this - just kidding . . . I'm hiding in the bathroom) You can see where this is going. Like with anything there can be too much of a good thing and there are a few obstacles to being constantly together. But I have found that pet sitting and traveling independantly has been a huge help in giving us more space. And you know the saying (occasional) "distance makes the heart grow fonder".
If you're anything like me and love to be traveling - exploring new or familiar areas and making more four-legged friends. Give this a try, there are a variety of sites available but we use Trusted House Sitter. They have international sits as well (if you fancy a few months in France. . . I mean) - and all over the U.S. - it seems more and more folks are trusting the site as their name implies. It is a paid service for both the hosts and the sitters - plus a profile must be completed but after that, you're ready to begin. What a winning way to spend your Vacay. Happy Travels.

]]>Responsible dog owners pick up after their pets in public places. However, there are times when owners neglect to pick up their dog's waste, perhaps they are in a rush, don’t have poop bags, or they don’t see why it’s so important. And because of this, you’ve probably stepped in more than your share of undisposed dog poop. Chances are you’ve stepped in dog poop and not even been aware of it until you smell it wafting through your car. This is just one of many reasons why it is so important to clean up after your dog. Here are a few more.
If you believe that dog poop will break down or just wash away, you're wrong. Dog waste can take up to 12 months to fully break down. Plus, when rainwater washes over dog poop, it flows into the drainage systems. Then the contaminated water is carried into lakes, streams, and rivers. What this means is the next time you go swimming in your favorite spot, you could be swimming in fecal water. Studies have shown that up to 30% of bacteria found in watersheds come from pet waste!
According to livescience.com America's 83 million pet dogs produce about 10.6 million tons of poop every year!
The parasites and bacteria in dog waste can spread disease to other dogs and even you if not properly picked up. E. coli and salmonella are some of the bacteria which are carried in dog waste. Even if your dog does not show symptoms of being sick their waste can carry diseases that are harmful to humans and other pets. Plus, Coronavirus, Giardiasis, Parvovirus, Cryptosporidiosis, Salmonellosis, and Campylobacteriosis, along with several types of worms like ringworm and tapeworm.
The parasites and bacteria can stay in the soil for years. By not picking up after your dog, you're putting other people's pets at risk for exposure to harmful bacteria. Children who play outside and gardeners are at the most risk for contamination.
This harmful bacteria also affects water quality. There are nutrients and pathogens that can pollute the water if the poop is not disposed of correctly. When your furry best friend does his business and the waste ends up in the water, it decomposes and releases harmful nutrients that will cause excessive growth of algae and weeds in the water. The water will become smelly and unusable for locals to swim, fish, or boat in. When water is polluted with this kind of waste it can cause severe illness for humans.
You should avoid letting your dog poop within 200 feet of a body of water and remember to never throw dog waste into a storm drain.
Picking up after your dog is not only common courtesy but your duty as a pet owner. When feces is left lying in yards, grassy areas, parks, and even the sidewalk the smell can quickly become overwhelming! IT STINKS! When you take your dog for a walk away from your home, you are entering public property. Because you own your dog, what waste your dog makes is your responsibility to pick up. It is even the law to clean up after your pet in some urban and suburban areas. Plus, it’s just good manners.
While it may be convenient to re-use plastic grocery bags, a more environmentally-friendly option is biodegradable baggies made specifically for the job.
If you think, as many people do, that dog waste is a natural fertilizer, think again. Since most dogs' diets are high in protein, it has the reverse effect of fertilizer. Dog poop is exceptionally high in nitrogen and phosphorus, so if you let your dog’s waste lay in your grass, it can actually cause burns in your lawn. Since it’s so acidic, it will kill your grass if it isn’t picked up.
Dog waste isn’t the same as cow manure since cows eat plant matter. While cow poop can be used as compost in gardens and fields. In fact, dog poop can contaminate fruits, vegetables, and surrounding areas with harmful bacteria if not composted properly.
You might think that your dog’s poop cannot do much harm. However, it can throw off the balance of an ecosystem especially in heavily populated areas. An ecosystem can handle about two dogs per square mile. However, in many cities, there are close to 125 dogs per square mile! Which is plenty to throw off an ecosystem especially if some owners are not picking up pet waste on a regular basis.
It’s pretty well established that plastic bags are a major source of waste that inflames the Earth’s tremendous plastic trash problem that has many negative side effects on the environment. In the United States alone we use about 14 billion plastic bags annually. When these bags are pushed into the environment they have devastating effects on wildlife, ecosystems, and soils. So, why are we still using them to pick up our pet’s poop? There are many ways you can dispose of pet waste but the best option is home-compostable pet waste bags. These types of bags are durable and won't leak, tear, or break.
Compostable poop bags can be made in part from corn starch, an annually renewable resource, and other bio-based proprietary components. The bags will break down in a properly managed home compost within 6-12 months.
The time to break down could vary depending on several factors like temperature, oxygen levels, and micro-organisms. Remember, due to the possible bacteria and parasites, dog waste is not safe to use in compost that will be used for edible vegetation or agriculture. It is completely safe for other uses like flower gardens and lawn soil, however. So be sure to use separate composting for each. Using home-compostable pet waste bags and composting them properly, will help keep landfills free from plastic and keep our neighborhoods clean.
Learn more about Home Composting with Doggy Do Good here.
Remember, cleaning up after your dog is not only common courtesy but safer for both you, your pet, and your community.

Learn How to Enter Your Pet!]]>So, I just finished writing a post about how it's near to impossible to stay at a hotel comfortably with your pup. It's expensive and stuffy and can sometimes cause stress for our little furry nugget as she's cute and people love to pet her and it can freak her out (I get it).
And then I remembered La Posada Hotel in Winslow, AZ. - perhaps our only amazing hotel with pup experience.
My husband, pup and I were road-tripping out West and I demanded to be "standing on a corner in Winslow Arizona - such a fine sight to see." That's right - I love The Eagles - and if we're passing by anyway. . . STOP!!
There's not much to see in Winslow other than this corner and La Posada Hotel. But worth an overnight. The hotel is stunning and well maintained - with a beautiful restaurant - The Turquoise Room - that has traditional Native American fare and the hotel's decor is Southwestern.
Lots of outdoor green space for your pup to roam - which is a rarity when traveling. This hotel used to be a train stop and I believe they are trying to get this tradition up and running again. It was a resort destination for Hollywood Stars to retreat and relax when they needed some time away. All of the rooms are named after a Star of the Silver Screen or Entertainer of some genre - We stayed in the Jackie Gleason Room.
There was a Pet Fee but it was a deposit and was returned minus $10 once the room was cleaned and assessed for damages.
I don't know that we'll need to stop in Winslow again - but - we're happy we did and will rave about this hotel to anyone that happens to be passing by.

I woke up with my tail thumping from happiness.
Our bed is so big and comfy.
I sleep sideways between my pawrents - so I can touch them both at once. That way, I know they are both warm and happy.
I love mornings because they come with treats. They call them vitamins, but they're treats.
Then cereal for breakfast (that's kibble)
Then we go for a long walk.
I pooped. It was the best.
When we were at the coffee shop a few people walked by and I got one lick on each of their legs. score!!
But no pup cup today. rude. I was waiting outside though - so they probably couldn't see how cute I am. Cause it ALWAYS works at the drive-thru
We're back home now - and I'm ready for a nap.
Later, probably gonna poop again . . .
Lounge in the sun . . .
more napping . . .
treats . . . another walk . . .
dinner . . .
Hope your day is pawsome too.
bye.

We've been Airbnb guests both internationally and all over the U.S. since 2012. But now - we're always traveling with our puppy child, Olive. And, she doesn't fly - so we're keeping this particular post local (U.S. & Canada) and driveable. Perfect for a summer family road trip.
We have stayed in hotels here and there with Olive - but - you do pay a pretty hefty fee to have your fur baby with you and it's simply not that comfortable. In and out of the lobby caused her anxiety - a condensed area of strangers wanting to pet her - it just wasn't great all around.
But - Airbnb is the easiest solution and here are a few of our topmost brilliant - Pet-Friendly Accommodations in the U.S. (and one in Canada)
Nashville, Tennessee (Goodletsville) - Cozy Pet Friendly Retreat Near Nashville - This spot is awesome - Donna is an animal loving 'host with the most' - It is a 35-40 min drive to get into downtown Nashville - but - well worth it to stay in one of our favorite spots. Tons of outdoor (fenced-in) space - and private - her pups can be in another section of the yard. Her accommodations go way above and beyond a traditional hotel or even an airbnb experience. All kinds of snacks and travel sized items are provided - the bed is huge and comfortable - we are trying to find a reason to get back to Music City asap just to stay with Donna once again.
Tobermory, Ontario (Canada) - Holy bananas YOU GUYS - Janet & Merv's Mermaid Boutique Guest House is a destination on to itself. It was my Birthday and out of season (October) for the area of Tobermory - but - so stunning - we hiked and ate at the two restaurants that were still open. Each morning - Janet made us an incredible breakfast and left it on the patio outside of our room. They are lovely humans and Olive felt right at home to run around and enjoy her vacation as well!! We almost applied for citizenship so we could stay forever - but - we're hoping to be back again soon. An out of season experience was very chill - and relaxing - during the warmer weather months this area can be super busy - you'll be able to swim in the grottos and take the ferry to some of the surrounding islands - but there will be lines for dining and other activities. But based on what we experienced during the colder months the wait will be worth it.
Charlotte, North Carolina - Historic Dilworth Bungalow - I almost don't want to tell you about this spot - because it's like a secret little artistic maze. But I think the jig is up because Susan is getting glowing Airbnb reviews. The best way to describe her home is - Antiques Roadshow meets Alice in Wonderland sprinkled with an old Western Town. Plus there's Jazz records, a grand piano, and a pinball machine!! Wild. My husband and I had planned to explore Charlotte - but we ended up just exploring this Airbnb. We sat out in the back yard - read - played darts. Walked the neighborhood which is right by a gorgeous park. We can't wait to go back. Olive particularly enjoyed the large front porch to watch the world and people passing by.
We have stayed in lots of pet-friendly spots but these three go way above and beyond. They are so exceptional you could plan a trip to that area just to stay in this destination home.
I will keep updating as an exceptional stay comes our way.

]]>I LOVE when things work out like this - it's kismet!! We'd planned a trip to New Orleans for a Basketball Game (The Detroit Pistons vs The New Orleans . . . I don't know. . . ) and of course to visit one of our favorite cities.
The music - the food - the fabulous vibe of this city - it's difficult NOT to enjoy a trip to The Big Easy.
We booked an Airbnb - which is our go-to accommodation because it's a zillion times better than a hotel - especially when you're traveling with your pup (which we always are).
And Cheryl's place did not disappoint - she has a duplex shotgun home in the Bywater district (this area is really up and coming) and it is AWESOME. She lives on one side and you stay on the other side. Her home is Mardi Gras themed - very comfortable - safe - there's a pool - she keeps music playing outside in the yard - the bar was stocked for us . . . I mean - that's just FUN. We've already booked to go back in a few months. We liked it.
Cheryl is also a lover of animals and has two rescue pit bulls of her own - a few cats - feeds the birds (there were wild parrots ya'll - I had never seen that) chickens ventured over one day. It's an oasis.
We crossed paths with our host in the yard on our first day and she mentioned she works at Villalobos Rescue Center - a few blocks from her place and we should go over to check it out. And of course, we did!! We'd never watched the show on Animal Planet but it seems to be generating a great awareness to help what these hardworking humans are doing.
We toured the rescue and met the stunning adoptable dogs - we ate at Tahyo Tavern (which donates all it's proceeds to the rescue) and we went back in the evening to walk some of the pups.
Our visit to Villalobos Pit rescue was a brilliant way to spend a day in New Orleans. Sure, we ate beignets and did some day drinking - but the best experience was staying with Cheryl and being open to her life and interests to realize we have so much in common. It enriched our trip by an immense amount and you're simply not going to find that at a hotel.

Holy heck . . . it's trashy out here. (And by here - I mean on the planet, earth.)
WHY, oh why do we need everything wrapped in a plastic container and then put into a doubled up plastic bag? (I'm talking to you CVS) What the flip is going on here?
There's so much garbage and waste produced each and every day - by me and you - YIKES!! Feel free to google the numbers, it's gross.
I have to be honest - Until this year, I pretty mindlessly went thru my day - hitting up Starbucks - running some errands and doing work at our Eco-Friendly Pet company (that's right I know better than to be such a dumpster human) . . . and then, kicking around social media I began to see these hardworking zero waste humans - entire families - that are making amazing changes in how they live and how they shop, being extremely conscious with their choices and I was SO INSPIRED!!!
If an entire family with many kids can pull it together and create less trash - certainly my husband and puppy child can make some changes!! The first thing that came to mind when thinking about this subject was the beautiful words of Maya Angelou "I did then what I knew how to do. Now that I know better, I do better." But that's the bizarre thing about how we live our lives.
I do know better. I've known better for a long time now.
But - I need to work harder - to become more diligent in my choices and in planning to shop and in being aware of what I'm grabbing off a shelf and if there is an alternative way to do this. Reusable cloth bags - bamboo toothbrushes - stop with the straws and single-use bags already . . . taking some steps and building from there.
That's all it is - "work harder at doing better." might be the more appropriate quote.
The earth is a stunning place to live and we really don't have a lot of other options. If you want to stop using plastic bags to pick up your pups poop - You can make that switch right now - check out our video below.
I'd love to know more about what changes you've made that could help me on this path or tricks to living a less trashy lifestyle. Leave a comment below.

]]>Despite my unhinged emotions - We had an awesome experience and opportunity to visit The Gentle Barn in Santa Clarita California - it's just 40 minutes from LA - and you can visit on Sundays to meet the rescued animals and walk around - perhaps have some Vegan snacks etc. What a brilliant way to talk about and teach compassion and kindness for all living things.
Well, what I wasn't anticipating was having the opportunity to meet the AMAZING Ellie and Jay - the humans behind all of the Gentle Barn Sanctuaries (TN, MO etc) - Ellie told a beautiful story about a cow in a horrible backyard butcher situation - which they rescued but didn't know she had a calf that was left behind (it was Mother's Day after all) - the farmer was hiding it and they ended up figuring it out and going back to save her baby and they live together right here at the Sanctuary!!!! I mean . . . . I'm sobbing just writing this - so you can imagine me in person.
I eventually pulled it together and was able to chat with them about our Pet Company and our mission to create earth-friendly products - while also giving back. It was a wonderful experience - they are very strong human beings and it taught me a wonderful lesson - crying and hurting about cruelty or injustice is fine because it's awful - but - there needs to be ACTION in there too. If I want to help and make changes in the world - I need to stop crying about it and DO SOMETHING about it - Do Something GOOD. It is only in thru the process of doing that real changes will be made and all of your tears will actually have an impact.
Please check out The Gentle Barn Sanctuaries - and consider supporting this great place - or perhaps plan a visit for your family!!

A few years ago, I was doing my daily ritual of scrolling through social media when I saw this older dog, in need of a foster family, so she could get pulled out of a gassing facility. You can imagine the horror - my immediate thought was - "That's us. WE can do it. NO WAY is this pup getting gassed!" The plan was, we'd foster for a bit and one of our friends, neighbors or family will fall in love with her. Easy. No problem.
We already had a pup named Olive who we got as a baby (she was born in the rescue), but we knew we could and had to do much more to help. So here was our chance to be FOSTERS and luckily I had spotted Annie and the adventure began.
She was so thin and barely able to walk when she arrived from Project Hope Animal Rescue in Coldwater, MI. My husband carried her around the house - up and down the stairs to get anywhere we were - she was never able to do stairs very well. And as is so commonly the case our "foster plan" completely worked - It only took 24 hours to find the perfect family to fall in love with her - Us (foster fails). We decided she needed (we needed) our (her) love and care FOREVER to become the adorable boss she was always meant to be - and that is exactly what she did.
Annie was awesome and funny and bossy. She gained weight and strength - she taught Olive to use the doggy door (a task we had failed at, despite using it ourselves as an 'example'). She was very different than Olive - she was hesitant to show affection almost as if she didn't really know what it was. And honestly, we didn't blame her - who knows what she had experienced. But we love hard in our house and she caught on quickly. Even to the point that if she barked just long enough she would get a pupcake (we cave easily and are weak pup parents). Once she escaped the backyard and barked outside the front windows back at the house for us to come outside and take her for a walk. She just waited in the front yard. Crazy - my heart nearly stopped - she was out there ALONE!!! She found a dead squirrel and chased me around the yard with it (Everyone gets a good laugh at my expense on that one). She loved mud and had a knack for finding it and getting right in. Let's just say, she was wild and the adventures were many.
Annie's life was very full. We loved and traveled and spoiled and played and barked and started a business together. That's right, Annie became the CBM (Chief Barketing Manager) of Doggy Do Good - our small family business. Her life inspired us to do more good. Even since her passing, we feel her legacy goes on as our business grows. She was a founding member and we work hard every day to make her proud.
Though she had finally found a wonderful home she came with a myriad of health troubles: she was deaf, had few teeth, cancer, her legs began to give out, in the last few months of her life was having seizures. As is often the case, her time with us was not long enough. Two and a half amazing years after she came to live with us, we had to say goodbye, from a brain tumor. We set up a hospice blanket bed in our home and (with vet supervision) she was comfy and loved right until her eyes closed for the last time.
She will be in our hearts forever and we are so grateful to have had her in our lives. Foster failing was a true gift. Thank you for following our story of Doggy Do Good and us - this is how it all began.

]]>This was a Thanksgiving we will never forget and truly changed the way we feast from that moment on. My husband and I have been fans of the work of Ellie & Jay - the founders of Gentle Barn for many years. They are doing amazing, difficult work and are an inspiration as Animal Welfare Advocates and as humans. (A portion of our Pet Waste Bag sales is donated to help with all the good they are continuing to do.)
So when I got an email from them saying we could share our day of Thanks at the animal sanctuary in Tennessee - I knew we had to!!!
We broke the news to our families (they got over it) - that we'd be a few days delayed in returning home for the holidays and it was such a special event.
We toured the sanctuary - we loved on all the beautiful animals that live there now in peace and kindness. We drank - we dined on the most scrumptious vegan meal and sat with all brand new friends.
It was really in meeting all these other amazing humans - who are doing so much good in the choices that they make and in volunteering and rescuing - that has continued to inspire us still today to make better choices in what we eat - and how we live with a much deeper awareness of ALL the living creatures around us.
To learn more about sharing this day with the amazing folks and beautiful, kind, creatures at the Gentle Barn in Tennessee - check them out - the day was family-friendly - you can also check their website to visit their many locations during their weekend hours.

My sister is a hard lady to get a date with - she has a young son and is a school teacher - she lives a few hours away from us - her life is full . . . . but when we suggested a date to Sasha Farm in Manchester, Michigan - she packed up the car and headed our way.
And, we had an awesome day!!
The sanctuary is in the beautiful countryside - just outside of a small, Michigan town. Residing there, are some feisty and loveable potbelly pigs - a cat house - goats - horses and many more - including the VERY sweet and snuggly OX Bhima - honestly - he's worth the visit - from where ever you live. A rare sighting for the midwest.
We spent the entire day visiting and eating amazing vegan fare from various food trucks - it was a wonderful way to spend quality time with family.
Seeing my nephew show such understanding, compassion and kindness to each animal - asking questions about them - feeding them - understanding that you need to be careful in how you approach them and to watch their behaviors - it will make him a stronger and kinder man as he grows up and we desperately need many more of those out in the world.
Check out Sasha Farms website to support their amazing work or check their events page to visit.
Stay up on our adventures . . .
