Compostable bags are typically made from 100% plant-based materials and are designed to decompose in properly managed composting facilities. However, very few composters accept pet waste, and when compostable bags end up in landfills — which is where almost all pet waste goes — they fail to decompose properly. Instead, they persist much like traditional plastic.

When microbes consume the plastic, they convert it to humus, carbon dioxide and methane. Carbon dioxide and methane produced through this process are often captured by landfills and turned into bioenergy.
